US Vice President, US Congressman. As a young man, he contributed articles on Indiana politics to the New York Tribune. He wrote editorials in support of first the Whig party and later Republican views. He was a member of the state constitutional convention in 1850 and was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fourth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving (1855-69). Having been selected a candidate to be on the ticket headed by General Ulysses S. Grant for President, he was elected as a Republican the 17th US Vice President and served (1869-73). After leaving office, Colfax embarked on a successful career as a lecturer. He died of a heart attack at age 61.
