Joseph was the son of Bernard and Bernadine Punpt Leising. He died in France during World War I and his parents along with 3 other local families of men that had died in France erected a memorial for them at the Holy Family Church Cemetery in Oldenburg Indiana. The four mens stones are on the four corners with the Memorial Statue centered in the middle.

Son of Benjamin and Bernadina Leising; born October 1, 1893, near Oldenburg, Franklin County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service March 28, 1918, Brookville, Ind. Trained at Camp Taylor, Ky., Camp Gordon, Ga., Camp McClellan, Ala., and Camp Merritt, N. J. Assigned to Company D, 115th Infantry, 29th Division. Overseas in June, 1918. Killed in action October 11, 1918, in Consenvoye Woods, north of Verdun. Buried in Argonne - American Cemetery, Romagne; Grave No. 41, Section 61, Plot 1.Son of Benjamin (s/b Bernard) and Bernadina Leising. Entered service Mary 28, 1918. assigned to Company D, 115th Infantry, 29th Div. and went overseas June, 1918. He was killed in Action in the Consenvoye Woods north of Verdun. Buried in Argonne-American Cemetery Romagne.
