He was killed in an attack by Taliban insurgents on his combat outpost in the Panjwaii district of Kandahar province. Another soldier was seriously injured and taken to hospital at Kandahar Airfield for treatment.
MCpl Doyle was described by a commander as "a big, tough, mountain of a man who enjoyed the outdoors. He was a true warrior and just the person you would want beside you in a firefight." A fellow soldier and long-time friend said that while Erin's physique may have intimidated some, he carried the nickname 'Friendly Giant' with pride. He leaves behind his wife Nicole and daughter Zarine; mother Kathy (Bob) Mitchell; father Melvin Doyle (Barb Loucks); siblings Saun, Keari, Scott, Jody and Kirk; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral Service with military honours held August 21, 2008 at St. Emile Catholic Church in Legal, AB. MCpl Doyle's flag-draped coffin was adorned with a number of NASCAR emblems, including the No. 20 of driver Tony Stewart, in honour of one of his passions.
He is the 90th Canadian soldier along with one diplomat to die since the Afghan mission started in 2002.
