Anchorage resident VIRGINIA GAIL MCDONNELL, 73, died Sept. 23, 2000, at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage from lung disease. A one-hour visitation and service were held at Muldoon Community Assembly, 7041 DeBarr Road. A reception followed. Burial was at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. McDonnell was born Dec. 27, 1926, in Spokane, Wash., and attended the University of California at San Diego. She moved to Alaska in 1954, living in Sitka and Anchorage. She worked as a self-employed accountant. In 1996, she retired but still remained active in the business. She was a past member of the American Society of Independent Accountants (ASIA). She enjoyed fishing, camping, entertaining family and friends, traveling, gardening, cooking, birdwatching and collecting rocks. Her family said, ''Virginia was a dynamic family leader who never failed to lend her support and guidance. Quick-witted and intelligent, she always captivated everyone in the room. Friends and family often sought her counsel. ''A longtime Alaskan, she loved Alaska and this was reflected throughout the home she shared with her husband, Jack. Her hobbies of fishing, camping and boating also showed her love of Alaska. ''She was never short of spirit and fought her disease with characteristic strength and class. She will be sorely missed by her numerous friends and family,'' her family said.

Mrs. McDonnell is survived by her husband, Jack McDonnell of Anchorage; sons, Steve Markle of Anchorage and Gene Markle Jr. of Homer; daughter, Kim Tix of Anchorage; nine grandchildren of Anchorage, Homer and California; sister, Betty DeChenne of Spokane, Wash.; and stepsons, Don Markle of North Carolina and Rick Markle of Japan. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial donations to the American Lung Association of Alaska, 500 W. International Airport Road, Suite A, Anchorage 99518. Arrangements by Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown.
