Daniel McDowell Short "was appointed First Lieut. by the President of the U. S. in the regular army, in 1846; served in Mexico, two years; was in command of his co. from Vera Cruz to Mexico, and participated in all the battles; resigned in 1848, and practiced law for 60 years: law partner of James P. Henderson and Oram M. Roberts; the personal enemy and political friend of Louis T. Wigfall; the personal friend and political enemy of Sam Houston; member of Secession Convention and of the 8th, 11th, and 13th legislatures; Captain of Co. E (mounted), C. S. He married (1) Sarah Dickerson, on January 10, 1852, (2) Ann Evaline Ballard, on July 11, 1855, and (3) Maggie M. Casey, September 9, 1862.
In 1860 the 38-year-old, widowed D M Short was listed in Shelby County, Texas, with children Seymore, 4; H B, 2; and Carroll, 1. In 1870, D M, age 50, and his wife Maggie, 27, were listed in Shelbyville with children Hugh, 14; Seymore, 12; Carroll, 10; Lillie (Lillian), 7; D M (Dan), 3; and Dwight, 5 months. By 1880 the couple had added children Clara, then 8; Frank, 6; Jennie, 4; and Hoon, 1.
"My father came to the State in 1842, temporarily stopping in what is now Harrison County, and in 1844 going to Sabine Town in Sabine County, and finally settling in Shelbyville in Shelby County in 1846. He used to tell me that he was not entitled to be called a 'pioneer' for the simple reason that he was not an early settler in a new country...." Judge H. B.
