John first deployed in World War II by flying
his P-40 Warhawk off the deck of the carrier
USS Ranger in the East Atlantic Ocean, and
landing at the airfield at Accra, British
West Africa. He then flew on to India, where
he served in the Far East operations for more
than two years.

He would be killed at Accra (present-day
Ghana) when the transport on which he was a
passenger returning stateside, C-54A
Skymaster #41-37292, crashed after takeoff.
