George I. Cunningham was born in Monroe Co., TN. He was the son of Abner and Celia (Stephens) Cunningham. He served as the Chairman of the Charleston County Commissioners in 1872, Mayor of the City of Charleston, and President of Charleston Waterworks Company. He was appointed a U.S. Marshal in 1879. He also served as Postmaster of Charleston, SC. He was a Mason and member of the Hybernian Society. He was reported to have been the grandson of Revolutionary War Soldier George Cunningham of NC, in various records.
