SAN ANTONIO -- Memorial service for retired Col. Gary J. Walk, 66, San Antonio, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Porter Loring Funeral Chapel, San Antonio, with Chaplain James Taylor officiating.

Col. Walk died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, in San Antonio.

Graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

A reception will follow from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at The Barn Door Restaurant.

He was born Oct. 26, 1941, in Harlingen, Texas, to Jack Frances Walk and Ruth Marie Sanderson. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1960, where he excelled in football and track and field. He then accepted appointment to the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. Following graduation from West Point in 1964, he attended Ranger School at Fort Benning, Ga. He then began his first military assignment as a Field Artillery second lieutenant in Kirsch Goens, West Germany. He next commanded 111 men in C Battery 7/9th Field Artillery, in Vietnam. Following his combat service, he received a Masters of Science Degree in Mathematics and a Masters Degree in Computer Science from Rennsaelear Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y. in 1970. He then returned to West Point and spent three years teaching upper division mathematics. He also received degrees from the Naval Command and Staff College in 1975, and the Army War College in 1984. During his military career, he served overseas in Germany, Vietnam, Korea, and Turkey. He retired from the Army in 1991 after 27 years of service. His final assignment was commander of the Fort Sill Readiness Group, directly under Fifth Army. During his military career his decorations included the Silver Star Medal earned during the Vietnam War. The highlight of his military service was as the commander of the 1/77th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Calvary Division Ft. Hood, Texas, where his battalion was designated the best in the 1st Calvary Division. He married Coella Perkins on Sept. 1, 1990, After his wife's retirement from federal civil service in May 1992, they settled in San Antonio. They then spent many years traveling the world together.

Survivors include his wife, of San Antonio; his children and their spouses: Wendy and Shawn Leasure, San Antonio; Lori and Mark Seiderman, Asheville, N.C.; Troy and Sara Perkins, Lawton; Brian and Samantha Perkins, Wichita Falls, Texas; four grandchildren: Connor, Evan, Evelyn, and Carter Perkins; a brother, Phillip Randall and Kathy Walk, Trinidad, Colo.; a nephew, Ryan Walk, Trinidad, Colo.; and a niece, Allysha Walk, Trinidad.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Dennis Walk.
