Verna A. Skare, 105, of Owatonna, passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 at Cedarview Care Center.

She was born Feb. 18, 1903 in Halstad the third of ten children of Sven and Regina (Gilbertson) Forseth. Verna graduated from Halstad High School. She continued her education at Moorhead state Teachers College in elementary education. She taught school for three years in Crosby where she met and married M. Samuel Skare in 1926. They lived in Crosby and Moorhead before moving to Mondovi, Wis. in 1935 where they owned and operated a Gamble-Skogmo store for 41 years. Verna continued to be a substitute teacher for the Mondovi school system.

Verna was a long time and devoted member of First Lutheran Church of Mondovi, Wis. She was actively involved in teaching Sunday school and served as the superintendant for many years. She was also active in bible school, alter guild, sewing circle and women of the church of which she served as president. Verna and her husband moved to Owatonna in 1976 to be near family members in Minnesota. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Verna lived independently until December, 2007 when she became a resident of Cedarview Care Center.

Verna had many hobbies, the favorite being cooking and baking. Her specialties were Norwegian goodies and lefse. She also loved traveling, gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting, hardanger and needlepoint. Her love of travel continued after her 100th birthday. Her most special times were those spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Robert (and Marilyn) Skare of Fall Creek, Calif. and their children, Randolph (and Debra) Skare of Savage, Robertson Skare of Tower, Rodger (and Karin) Skare of Eagen, Richard (and Kristin Skar of St. Michael. Verna is also survived by her daughter, Jenelle (and George) Dow of Owatonna and their children, Craig Dow of Bloomington, David (and Lezli) Dow of Owatonna, Nancy (and Scott) Crandall of Plano, Texas, Paula (and Grant) Snitker of Owatonna and Lisa Dow of Chicago, Ill. and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Sam in 1993 and all nine of her siblings.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday from 1-2 p.m. Funeral services will be held Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Julie Malone officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church, Minnesota Services for the Blind or to the donor's choice.
