THAYER, H. STANDISH
H. Standish Thayer, Ph.D. of South Nyack, New York passed away on August 8th, 2008, after a brief illness. Born in 1923, he enjoyed a distinguished career as professor of philosophy at Columbia University, City College and finally The Graduate School of The City University of New York, from which he retired in 1990 as Professor Emeritus of Philosophy. Loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by wife Elisabeth, children Hewitt, Alexandrea and Jonathan, and grandchildren Madeline, David, and Mary. A prolific writer on the subject of Pragmatism, he garnered the respect and admiration of colleagues and students, and was the recipient of numerous honours, including two appointments to The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. In addition, he served on The Board of Advisors of The Cousteau Society, was vice president of The John Dewey Foundation and was a member of the advisory committees for editions of the works of William James and Charles Sanders Pierce. In retirement, he enjoyed a career as an artist as prolific as was his academic career, producing works in various media including oil and watercolor painting, etching, print-making and sculpture. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc. in Nyack.
