Marion was the son of John Wiley "Johnny Clay" Birchfield of Blount County, TN and his second wife Annie Birchfield Birchfield of Graham County, NC.He grew up mostly in the Forney's Creek Community of Swain County, NC where he had been born and where his father was a logger.

Marion's father had previously been married to Margaret "Maggie" Louisa Nichols of Cades Cove, TN and they were the parents of Lee and Clifford. These children went by the name of Nichols because their parents divorced when they were very young, their mother died a few years later, and they were raised for awhile by their Nichols grandparents. So Marion and his brothers Tom and Edmond "Ed" had a half brother and a half sister.

When WWII entered, Marion and his brother Tom signed on to defend their country. Tom was killed and is buried in Rome, Italy. His memorial is #15787114. Marion stayed in the military. Their brother Ed lived and worked in Graham County, NC until his death.
