The inscription on her grave says it best. "Eliza, born in a tule reed house near Sutter's Fort, California, to pioneers Thomas Jefferson Shadden and Martha Sumner, was the first child born in California to a family that had crossed the plains over the Oregon Trail.

Eliza married John Wallan 21 Jan 1858. They had 10 children before her death. Through the Bear Flag Revolt, California Gold Rush, and Oregon Statehood, Eliza lived a life parallel to the pioneer history of California, Oregon, and the West."

Eliza is noted as an early California Pioneer in the Native Daughters of the Golden West's pioneer roster. Eliza married 24 year old John when she was only 14 years old and she gave birth to her first known child, Mary, at the age of 16.

She was only 39 years old when she died.
