His parents were Joseph Chestnutt and Mary (Kight) Sumner Sr. He married Mahala Smith the 19 Apr 1813 in Emanuel County, Georgia. Seventeen Children were born to them. Location of cemetery is 3 miles north of Sumner, Georgia. The cemetery land still belongs to the descendants of Joseph Sumner Jr. as of 1996. He served in the War of 1812 while living in Emanuel County, Georgia. This family is listed in the 1840-1850 Irwin County, Georgia census and 1860-1870 Worth County, Georgia census. Joseph and his wife Mahala immigrated to Worth county about 1830.
