Ina B. Barnes, 90, mother of former Texas Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes and his brother, Richard Barnes, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, in an Austin hospice from complications of a stroke.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, First United Methodist Church, 630 Highland Avenue, Dublin. Interment: Earth Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Dublin Highway 77, between Dublin and Stephenville.
Mrs. Barnes was born Sept. 26, 1916, in Proctor, the daughter of B.E. and Lydia Franklin Carrigan.
In 1933, she married B.F. Barnes, a peanut farmer and Humble pipeline employee, whose family was one of the founding pioneer families of the Comyn community where they lived for many years.
They later moved to nearby De Leon and then to Dublin. He died in 1986. They were married almost 53 years.
Mrs. Barnes spent her latter years in Austin near her son, Ben, and his family.
After raising her two sons, she attended Tarleton State College, becoming a nurse. She and her husband managed one of the early nursing home facilities in Dublin.
Later, she was the director of nursing at the Dublin Care Center. She was known for the excellent care she provided her patients and for her reputation in demanding that her assistants provide that same high quality of care.
Reared in a farming community where she worked hard and survived fhe "Great Depression," she encouraged her two sons to pursue a higher education. She urged them to consider other professions rather than relying on a farming career so dependent upon the uncontrollable forces of nature.
Her greatest pride was the success her sons achieved. The eldest son, Ben Barnes, became the youngest speaker of the Texas House of Representatives at 26 and lieutenant governor at 32.
Now a successful business entrepreneur, he resides in Austin.
Her younger son, Richard C., a retired congressional staff member for the U.S. House of Representatives and banker, lives in Alexandria, Va.
She was also very proud of her six grandchildren, Greg, Amy, Jeff, Tim, Elena and Blaire, and her four great-grandchildren, Ben and Kelly Barnes, and Ashley and Katherine Mathis. Ina B also leaves behind her beloved dog, Cinco.
A woman of great integrity and strong convictions, she leaves a legacy that will long be remembered by all of those whose lives she touched.
The eldest of four children, her brothers, Jim and Ray Carrigan, and a sister, Jackie Laughlin, preceded her in death.
