Louis J Beach. There is a lot known of him, and a lot of mystery. His father was James Beach and the "J" in his name may be for James, but he had a brother James, so maybe not. His mother's name was Rosanne but it is uncertain what her maiden name was. On various records it is listed as Neff or Beebe. He was often referred to as LJ, Lou, or spelling variations of Louis.
He was born July 25 either 1855 or 1854, in Michigan or Canada. He has many records available for his life but they all contradict each other.
About 1874 he married Celia Gordon, probably in Marine City, St. Clair County, Michigan. They were on the 1880 census in Marine City with 2 children. Interestingly their oldest son, Arthur, would be born the day after the census was taken. There were also boarders living with them, Walter and James Beach. These were probably LJ's brothers. All 3 men worked at a stave mill.
LJ and Celia moved to Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan sometime between 1880 and 1884. The remainder of their 8 children were born in Wayne County.
At some point of his life he worked as a salesman for the Singer Sewing Machine company.
In the early 1890's Louis moved his family to Danville, Vermillion County, Illinois. It is not know why they chose this location but it could have been for work for Louis. Danville was not a good experience for them. In 1895 they lost their youngest son, Earlius, at age 8 in a wagon accident and shortly after that Louis left to find work, never to return. His wife, Celia, eventually moved back to Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan and eventually most of the adult children, now married, followed.
He dropped out his family's life for many years. In the late 1920's one of his daughters hired a private investigator to find him. He tracked him down to Amherst, Loraine County, Ohio.
In 1903 Louis married Julia Doring in Hamilton County, Ohio. On this marriage record he lists himself as divorced but no record of a divorce has been found.
Louis died 26 January 1936 in Amherst, Loraine County, Ohio. His wife, Julia, passed away 2 months later. He and Julia are buried in the Cleveland Street Cemetery, Amherst, Loraine County, Ohio. His pallbearers were Arthur Beach, his son, and Walter H. and James Beach, unknown relationship and Robert Nye.
