"James J. Berrigan, 58, died Sunday at his home 219 East Church Street. He was well known in this city as a butcher, having been associated with the A and P Stores the last 15 years. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation. Surviving is his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Carlyle Engle of South Williamsport, Mary, Kathleen and Evelyn, at home; eight sons, Fabian of Bridgeport, Conn., Frederick of Fort Eustis, VA, Joseph of Peoria, Ill., James, Jr. of this city and Andrew, John, Paul and Michael, at home; a sister, Mrs. William Hinchman of Columbus, O. and nine grandchildren. Funeral Mass and burial were held Wednesday."
August 10, 1941:
"Neither prominence nor affluence fell to the lot of James J. Berrigan, who died yesterday at his East Church Street home at the age of 58, but he left behind him a rich estate.
This estate consists of a family of four daughters and eight sons, each of them possessed of qualities which are evidence of sound parental training.
Those who have had opportunities to observe the family have admired the manner in which the children, as they grew up, welcomed opportunities to work and to contribute their share toward the maintenance of the family. Their sense of mutual responsibility was quite obviously the fruit of parental example.
Courteous, industrious, self-reliant, the family constituting Mr. Berrigan's estate is evidence of the fine manner in which he met the great responsibility which life placed upon him."
James Berrigan's wife is Mary Krimm Berrigan.
