William Amasa Samford is the son of Elkanah and Mary Samford. W. A. Samford married Sarah Evaline Webb on November 5, 1848, in Shelby County, Texas. On April 2, 1862, William A. Sanford enlisted at Buena Vista, Shelby County, Texas, by A. M. Truit, for 3 years or the war, as a private in Company A, 28th Regiment, Texas Cavalry. At mustering-in, his horse was valued at $175, and his equipments at $25. He was on a 60-day furlough beginning February 25, 1864.

Children include Lavinia Jane (b. 1850, d. 1879), George C., Mary, Thomas K., Elkanah B., Margaret, Sarah Anne "Sallie," William A., John Carl, Robert E. Lee, James E.

In the 1900 census, Shelby County, W. A. Samford, 72, b. Nov. 1827 in Alabama, is listed with wife Sarah E., 67, b. July 1832 in Tennessee. The couple had been married 51 years; Sarah had had 11 children, and 9 were living. Living next door were H. L. Samford, 48, b. in TX; his wife S I., 50; and their 3 children.
