- His mother was Polly Bynum. Her 1884 obituary says he was judge of the Seventh Judicial Circuit of Alabama.

- He was postmaster of Edinburgh, Hidalgo County in 1874 and his wife, Louisa, was postmaster of Hidalgo County in 1877.

- His obituary states he was Deputy Collector for U. S. Customs in Hidalgo, Texas and Hidalgo County Ranch Histories says he was a Us Customs collector, attorney, and Confederate Veteran, owner of the El Sauz ranch & a member of first Methodist congregation (founded in 1874) in Hidalgo county.

- At 37, on 30 Dec 1869 in Hidalgo County Texas, he married his first wife- 15 year old Martha Jane Rutledge, the daughter of Nancy Smith Jackson, a Mullatto, and Abraham Rutledge, a fellow white Confederate. Either they did not have any children or none survived infancy. She died in 1873 at the age of 19.

- A year later at the age of 42 he married his second wife- his wife's cousin, 26 year old Louisa Singleterry (the daughter of Emily Smith Jackson- the sister of his fist wife's mother) on 28 August 1874 in Hidalgo County Texas.

- He died a week after their 4th child was born. His oldest child was only 4 and a half years old. His wife lived 52 more years. And never remarried.
