Amy Morris Bradley was born in a small town in Maine in 1823. She was an exceptional child, wanting to learn and was always asking questions. The more she grew and the more she learn about society, she felt that women were not getting treated fairly in America.
Sometime early in the civil war she wanted to volunteer her services as a nurse. She was accepted and placed with the 5th Maine Infantry Regiment.
After the Civil War she was brought to
Wilmington by a group of Northern
folks who wanted to provide schooling for
the City children as there was a lack of
good schools in Wilmington. These folks
provided the money for her. She set up a
school and soon the children were learning.
A small school was built & she taught there
until a larger shcool was built. This was at
the site of the old Tileston School now part
of the Saint Mary Catholic School.
