Miriam Wolcott Huigen, age 102 and a lifelong resident of Jasper county, Iowa and a long time teacher, died Friday, August 1, 2008, at Park Centre in Newton, Iowa. Funeral services were held on Monday, August 4, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Silent City Cemetery, Monroe, Iowa. .... Mrs. Huigen was a school teacher in Jasper for 37 1/2 years, following her mother and sister into that profession. She taught in Ira, various one-room country school near Monroe - the Zerley School, McCrosky, Pleasant Hill, Union Valley and Sunny Point - and at Monroe Public School. In the later years her students included children and grandchildren of her earlier students.
Her favorite stories were about what she and her students had learned about life during the day-to-day process of schooling. Many students enriched her retirement years by staying in contact.
After living nearly her whole life in Monroe, Mrs. Huigen became one of the first residents of the newly opened Wesley Park Centre in Newton, Iowa and thoroughly enjoyed her new life and friendships there. She retained her membership in the Monroe United Methodist Church but often attended First United Methodist Church in Newton, Iowa.
She was born Mairiam Wolcott on March 9, 1906 in Monroe, Iowa the daughter of Mary Alzena [Lackey] Wolcott and James Franklin Wolcott. She graduated from Monroe Public High School in 1924, attended Des Moines University's Normal School that summer and began teaching in September of that year. She continued her college education weekends, evenings, and summers, receiving her bachelors degree in education from Drake University in 1964.
As a former high school basketball player, Mrs. Huigen had a life long interest in many sports, especially basketball. She followed collegiate and professional sports on Television. When Jess Settles, three time most valuable player at the University of Iowa was injured and missed most of the season, she wrote him a letter of encouragement, saying that, no matter what, given his interest in teaching, he could be "a hero in the Classroom." She was greatly pleased when Settles visited her during a stop in Newton, Iowa and they shot baskets at a hoop set up on a supermarket parking lot, across the street from her retirement home.
Mrs. Huigen was a member of the Order of eastern Star, the Monroe Women's Club and Pi Kappa Delta, a professional teachers' sorority.
She is survived by her son and daughter; Doug and Diane Huigen fo Spokane, Washington; granddaughters: Theresa Huigen of Aurora, Colorado; Mary Huigen of Helena, Montana; Julienne "Roo" Huigen of Denver, Colorado; Colleen Huigen Murphy of Greeley, Colorado; 7 great-grandchildren: Chris, Caylin Daly of Helena, Montana; Greggory, Colby, Ellie Miriam Johnson of Aurora, Colorado; Richelle, Nicholas Murphy of Greeley, Colorado; a nephew Don [Gin] Cash of Monroe, Iowa; their children: Lori, Jodi, Doug. She also was "Grandma Miriam" to Wolfey Gerhardt, who lives with Doug & Diane in Spokane, Washington. Preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters: Wilma Wolcott; Louise Wolcott Cash; her husband Cornie J. Huigen, former Monroe postmaster.
