Capt. D. G. Hughes' Cavalry Company in the Battalion commanded by Lt. Colonel N. A. Carswell, for local defence, to serve in that portion of the State South of the Muscogee railroad and Southwestern railroad to Echeconnee Creek, and South of said creek to the Ocrnulgoe River; thence South of the Altamaha River to the coast. Roll dated Aug 4, 1863, Marion, Twiggs County, Georgia. 6 months tour of duty.

The 1860 Census, July 5, GA Militia Dist., 325, Twiggs Co., GA, lists John, 40 and Ann M., 26. Children: John I., 16; Anna A., 14; William T., 8; Martha J., 6. Also in the household is Lucy A Carleton, 48. John's real estate is valued at $37,500 and his personal estate is $68,686. 


The 1870 Census, July 2, Gordon P.O., Twiggs Co., GA, lists John, 50 and M. E., 33. Children:. W. L., 20; M. J., 17; C., P., 9; J. E., 7; G. E., 4 and V. M. Barksdale, 14. John's real estate is valued at $13,000 and personal estate is $3550.
