Rex was the AAA Pacific Coast Champion in 1934 and 1935. He drove in his first Indianapolis 500 in 1934. Rex was the AAA National Champion in 1940 and 1941.

Rex was killed on Nov. 6th, 1949 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds when his car flipped and he was thrown onto the track. Although he survived being thrown out of the car, he was struck by another car. Rex died of head and chest injuries.
