John W Gates was a New York Stat Senator from 1927 to 1932. He also served as president of the former Salt Springs National Bank of Syracuse. He was past president of the Madison-Onndaga Mutual Insurance Co., and was an organizer of the Milk products Cooperative Association. He was a member of the Liederkranz club and affiliated with the Masonic Lodge 148 of Chittenango and the Syracuse Tigris Temple. He was honored by Governor Thomas Dewey as a Century Farmer. At the time of his death he was survivied by two sons, Francis G and Edward C Gates and daughter, Mrs. Wendell V Brown and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife Nellie M (Colyer) Gates.
