On 14 August 1909, Erik boarded the S.S. Mauretania in Liverpool, England where he departed for the US, arriving at Ellis Island on 20 August at the age of 20. Before moving, he changed his surname from Svensson to Johansson, and later became Johnson. Erik never again saw his parents after his move to the US.
