Marine Capt. Lawton was assigned to Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Camp Lejeune, North Caroline. He was riding in a tank that was struck by an IED in Herat province, Afghanistan. Age the age of 4, Garrett's family moved to Charleston, West Virginia. He joined the Marines on June 3, 1996 and was trained as a Qualified F/A-18D Weapons Systems Operator. Upon graduation from the University of West Virginia in 1999 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and promoted to captain in 2004. He served as an F-18 Weapons and Sensors Officer and an Air Officer for Marine Special Operations Command. His awards included the Bronze Star with combat "V: for valor, two Purple Hearts, seven Air Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the NATO Medal and a Certification of Commendation. Additionally, he was designated as a Naval Flight Officer and a Marine Corps Parachutist. Garrett was a loving husband to his wife, Trisha, and two sons. Despite his busy military career, he always made sure he spent time with his family. He was a scuba diver who also enjoyed boating, physical fitness and reading. At the age of eight, a photo was taken of Garrett wearing a full Marine uniform. He was born to become a Marine and he proudly died wearing the uniform.
