Valerie was the daughter of Kevin and Michelle Zavala. They moved to Fillmore, CA, where she was active in high school, getting good grades and cheerleading. She went on to college, and was a San Jose State University sophomore. She was a member and officer of the Alpha Kappa Delta Phi sorority there. Her brief, happy life brimmed with friends. She was always smiling. She was a cheerleader, a member of student government, the kind of person who would volunteer to be a designated driver for a New Year's Eve party. It was the last time anyone saw her alive. The next morning, she was found slain in rural Ventura County. The Ventura County coroner said she died of asphyxiation and suffered severe head trauma. She is survived by her parents; two sisters, Jessica and Kirsten; and a brother, Kevin. Samuel Puebla was tried and convicted of her murder and is serving a life sentence.
