PVT ROBERT JOHN MOWBREY GILSON

Robert John Mowbrey Gilson was born on 27 Feb 1844 in Teversham, Cambridgeshire, England, the son of Edward Gilson and Eliza Howell.

The family immigrated to the United States from Somerset, England in 1858 and settled in Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY. After the Civil War the family moved to Hurricane, Carroll Co, MO and finally to Dunkirk, Chautauqua Co, NY.

Robert served in the Civil War enlisting as a Private on 11 Aug 1862 at Tompkins, P.O. Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY and was mustered into service on 27 Sep 1862 at Delhi, Delaware Co, NY, into Co A., 144th NY Infantry.

Company A was the first group of Delaware County men recruited in the town of Tompkins. The unit served in the defenses of Washington from October 13, 1862 until August 15, 1863 when they went to South Carolina where they fought most of their battles; Morris Island, Fort Wagner, John's Island, Honey Hill, Deveaux's Neck, and James Island.

After the battle of James Island, Robert to sick and he died at Hilton Head Island, Beaufort Co, SC on 19 Jan 1865 at the Regimental Hospital due to inflamed lungs.

He was originally buried in the Cannonsville Cemetery, Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY, but his remains were disinterred and were removed to Oakwood Cemetery in 1963 during the construction of the Cannonsville Reservoir, under the direction of Clarence D. and Irene T. Hathaway, who listed Robert as a great-uncle.

Robert's surname is spelled Gillson on all records, i.e. census, immigration and military, but on all family graves it is spelled Gilson. This stone is laying on a small block of stone looking toward the sky. There are no birth or death dates.
