PVT SAMUEL NELSON BURNSIDE

Samuel Nelson Burnside was born on 12 Jan 1830 in Laurens, Otsego Co, NY, the son of James S. Burnside and Louisa Brooks.

He married Lois K. Clinton in June of 1853.

Lois and Nelson had two children: Louisa on 20 Jul 1859 and Fred N. on 25 Sep 1861.

Nelson served in the Civil War enlisting on 13 Aug 1862 at Tompkins, Delaware Co, NY and being mustered into Co A., 144th NY Infantry on 27 Sep 1862.

Company A was the first group of Delaware County men recruited in the town of Tompkins. They fought in the battles of Goose Creek, VA, Morris Island, SC, Fort Wagner, SC, John's Island, SC, Honey Hill, SC, Deveaux's Neck, SC, and James Island, SC.

Nelson and the unit were honorably discharged and mustered out on 25 Jun 1865 at Hilton Head, Beaufort Co, SC.

Lois died on 20 Aug 1872 in Barbourville, Delaware Co, NY.

Nelson married Harriet E. Haight in 1875 in Deposit, Delaware Co, NY, the daughter of Oliver J. and Sally Haight.

Nelson and Harriet had no children of their own, but Harriet raised his two children by Lois.

He died on 25 Nov 1920 in Masonville, Delaware Co, NY of cerebral apoplexy brought on by old age; he was 90y 10m 13d.

Date of Death on stone incorrect. Widow received her pension on 06 Jun 1921 and pension records reflect date of death to be 25 Nov 1920.
