US Congressman. At the start of the Revolutionary War, he entered the Continental Army at the age of sixteen. In actions against the British, he was captured and sent to England as a prisoner of war. After the war, he engaged in the mercantile business in Tarboro, North Carolina and was a member of the State House of Commons. In 1793, he was elected as an Anti-Administration candidate to the Third Congress and as a Republican to the Fourth and Fifth Congresses, serving until 1799. He was again elected as a Republican to the Ninth and Tenth Congresses, serving 1805 to 1809 and elected to the Twelfth Congress in 1811, serving until his death.
