U.S. Congressman. He attended Milton Academy Pennsylvania, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1853 and preceded practicing law in Milton, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the, Pennsylvania State Senate (1860-63) and served as a Private in the Union Army, for one of the emergency regiments called for the defense of the Pennsylvania State, during the Civil War. After the war, he practiced law and was elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, serving (1885-89). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 81.
