Well-Known Matthews Farmer Dies
Benson Baylis Forrest, 62 years, 10 months and 24 days old, farmer who lived a mile and one-half west of Matthews, succumbed at the Sikeston General Hospital on Glady St. at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11 due to a kidney ailment and complications.
Mr. Forrest had been in ill health two years. He had undergone a prostate operation in Barnes Hospital several years ago (1937) in St. Louis prior to entrace ten days before his death at the Sikeston Hospital.
A native of Camden, Tennessee, born March 18, 1879, he lived in Matthews community most of his life. At the time of his death he was still farming the 160-acre farm of Dr. A. W. Homberger of Louisville, Kentucky, for which he had farmed for about 17 years. He also operated the ice business in Matthews and the community in the summer and had the coal business in the winter months.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Matthews Gymnasium Thursday at 2 o'clock p.m. with Rev. J. W. Hoffert of Sikeston Nazarene Church officiating. Burial will be in the Sikeston City Cemetery here with Ellise Services.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Florence Forrest and four daughter, Lillian Jane, Ola Marie, Nina Maxine and Mary Ann; one son Benson Presnell; one granddaughter Charnelsa Joyce, Forrest: one sister Martha Ann Harden, all of Matthews; two half sisters Mrs. Effie F. Buchanan of New Madrid and Mrs. Azlee F. Pope of Parma; ans a half brother, Alfred Forrest of Glenn Rodgers, W. Va.
Mr. Forrest lost his first wife, Lucy Harden Forrest with tuberculosis and his step-daughter, Mable Harden Forrest, who carried his name, also died of tuberculosis and three children preceded him in death James Henry, Erma death certificate
