Army Spc. Dickson was assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Group Support Battalion, Group Service Support Company, Fort Carson, Colorado. He died in Balad of injuries sustained in a non-combat-related incident. At the age of 13, Kevin chose to move in with his best friend's family and Norma Griggs became a mother to him. He earned his GED in Job Corps and lived for several years in Steelville, Missouri before joining the Army in January 2006 where he trained as a construction equipment repair specialist. Shortly after arriving at his unit in January 2007, he deployed to Iraq and was currently on his second tour. Kevin was proud of his job in the military and seemed to find his niche in life being in the Special Forces. His awards include the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. Norma may not have been his natural mother, but her house was the one he'd spend holidays at and where he'd go on military leave. Now it is the place that friends and loved ones come together at to mourn him. Kevin's family was told he died from a gunshot wound to the head but friends and family hope he will be remembered as an outgoing, fun-loving boy who became a confident and strong man.
