Samuel was one of 10 children born to John Strader and Frances Piatt Strader.

Samuel and his brother ran steamboats in the Cincinnati and New Orleans trade for several years and then between Cincinnati and Louisville. Samuel and his brothers also formed a line of steamers which became the Cincinnati and Louisville Mail Line Company.

Samuel eventually bought a farm, became a merchant and then a Fire Insurance Agent.

He married Abigail Higgens who he met in the early 1830's when she was a passenger on the steamboat he was the Captain of.

They had 11 children but lost 2 sons and 2 daughters (ages 7 mos to 9 years) between 1847 and 1849, a daughter in 1860 at age 18 when she was thrown from a buggy, and a son, Homer Ser in 1863 in the Civil War.

Samuel was my 2nd Great Grandfather.
