His grandfather, Colonel Lawrence Hay Taliaferro, was a minute-man in the Revolution. His father, Lawrence Hay Taliaferro Jr. graduated from West Point and fought in the Mexican War. Catlett Conway Taliaferro prepared for college at the private school conducted by Professor William Hall Frazer. He had been a student at Rappahannock College one year when the Civil War broke out. At the age of fifteen he ran away from college and enlisted in the Ninth Virginia Cavalry. At the Battle of Front Royal, he was detailed a courier and scout to General Stonewall Jackson. He remained on Jackson's staff until the General's death. He stayed with Jackson's remains from Guinea Station to Richmond, and on to Lexington and the funeral. He returned to the Ninth and reported to General Lee who kept him on his staff. Attaining the rank of major, he served Lee until Appomattox, where he was selected to carry the flag of truce to General Grant. He was an eye-witness to the formal surrender of Lee. Major Taliaferro was wounded thrice, at Spotsylvania Court House, Sharpsburg and Winchester. After the War he farmed in Prince Edward for eight years, then moved to Roanoke becoming successful in the Real Estate and Railroading businesses. He was very active in the Democratic Party. He was a member of the city Exectutive Commitee and a director Southwestern State Hospital. He was on the board of vistors of Western State Hospital, Eastern State Hospital, Central State Hospital and Epileptic Hospital. He was a charter member and Commander of the Watts Camp of Confederate Veterans. Also an elder in the Presbybertian Church. He first married Nanny Terry, who died in 1903. He then married Elizabeth Meade Jones.
