William W. Dowling came to Georgia with his parents, Dennis and Mary Elizabeth Moore Dowling, and grew up in the Wayne and Lowndes Counties. (Jabez and Rebecca Dowling were his grandparents.) On Feb. 8, 1838 he married Ardelia Frier. She was born in 1825 and was the daughter of Rev. Ryan Frier. Ardelia died on Jan. 12, 1895.
The Dowlings had 10 children.

William W. Dowling participated in the Indian War serving in both the 2nd Florida Regiment and Newbern's Company of Georgia Militia. Later he served in the Florida Militia, as well.

William W. Dowling was the father of William Henry Taylor Dowling, the final resident of the Georgia Confederate Soldiers Home in Atlanta.

Mr. Dowling died on Jan. 19, 1884 and is interred at New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Lowndes Couty, Georgia
