Husband of Unknown Smith (who died within weeks of delivering Harriett due to Measles), and then later Sarah Jane Ford.
Father of Martha Ann, James M., Elizabeth Ann, Merinda M., and Harriett McGarrah Ottenhouse.
Son of Col. George J. McGarrah and Mary Rowell.

A member of the Peters Colony, George McGarrah brought his family to this area in the 1840's. Prior to his arrival in Texas, McGarrah had lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he is credited with helping to build many of the historic structures still extant in that city.

After McGarrah's wife died shortly after giving birth to their daughter Harriet, George and his children established a new home near McKinney, and he later married Sarah Ford.

The McGarrah Cemetery contains ten graves. George had set aside one-seventh of an acre of his land to be used for a family cemetery. He was the first person buried here in 1879.
