Judge J.P. Barnard, attorney, surveyor and early day settler in Oklahoma was laid to rest in Fairlawn Cemetery yesterday morning following two well attended funeral services at the Eagle's Halla nd St Joseph Cathedral.
The body lay in state for two hours at Eagles' Hall. The rituallstic services were conducted by Fire Chief Mark Kessler, president of the order. E.J. Giddings delivered the funeral oration. Members, in regalia marched in the funeral procession headed by the Metropolitan band to St Joseph's Church, where the requiem mass was said.
Judge J.P. Barnard was born in Jackson Mississippi in 1842. In the early days he saw frontier life in Canada, later lived in Nebraska then moved to Kansas. judge Barnard lost a fortune in the great grasshopper plague and in speculation. He often boasted that he came to Oklahoma in 1889 with $85 as his sole capital.
Brining his only daughter, Kate Barnard then a slipe of a girl, now state commissioner of charities with him. he went through the early fights and land complications of Kingfisher County. He came to OKC in 1892 having homesteaded a farm in Oklahoma County.
While admitted to the bar int he early days, Judge Barnard seems to have made his greatest success as a surveyor. He was ont he Union Pacific survey in 1867 and was on the governament survey in 1852(I think this date is wrong) which surveyed the entire Indian Territory for the Indian tribes, by reason of which he later rendered invaluable aid to the Dawes Commission in locating monuments of the origianl survey. At the time of his death Judge Barnard had acquired a comfortable fortune, owning two residence properties in OKC, two or three farms in Oklahoma County and two business blocks in Claremore, OK. He leaves Miss Kate Barnard, only child and living near relative, sole executrix of his estate.
