Winston David ("W. D." or "Wink") Smith married Flora O'dell Kathleen Brasher on 2 Dec 1933 Coaling Road, Talladega Co, AL. Both worked for years at Avondale Mills.

He was preceded in death by daughters Glenda Elaine (1936-1938) and Judith Gail (b/d 1940). He is survived by four sons.

Note about his birth name:

One of his sons told me that he was originally named David WINSON Smith, but he changed it to Winston David Smith, though orally and not legally.

The Family Bible gives his name as either David WINSON Smith or WINSON David Smith vs. WINSTON David Smith. However, he was known as WINSTON David Smith most of his life, and certainly most of his adult life.

When he was born, birth certificates in Alabama were just becoming required and as a result, his original 1909 birth certificate literally says "not named" and then lists his parents.

In the 1970s, when he retired and sought Social Security, he and his wife had to formally have their birth certificates amended to reflect their "legal" names (names in use). They had to bring the Family Bibles and one witness who had known them their entire lives (which I believe was an aunt) as evidence.

Since the Family Bible erroneously had his name listed as WINSON Smith, but he was always known as WINSTON David Smith, this created a slight problem. Nonetheless, his amended birth certificate has the Family Bible name of WINSON Smith and he was required to sign his own name "wrong" as well, to match. Whether the Family Bible says David WINSON Smith or WINSON David Smith, the amended birth certificate says WINSTON David Smith. (I have copies of both versions of the birth certificate. I do not have a copy of the Family Bible. I would love a copy if anyone else does).

Therefore, this is one case where the grave would *appear* to be in error over the Family Bible and official birth certificate, but isn't.

The 1910 and 1920 Coosa Co, AL census list him as David W. and the 1930 Coosa Co, AL census lists him as WINSON D. His 1933 marriage license lists him as Mr. D. W. Smith and the 1940 census lists him as WINSTON D. Smith.
