PROBABLY A SUICIDE.

Man Named Mellen Believed to Have
Drowned Himself Near Renshaw Bay.

Ellisburg , June 14.—A man named
Mellen who lived near Brewster Settlement
is supposed to have committed suicide
Saturday by drowning
in the lake near Renshaw bay . No
trace of the body has been found , nor
is it known that there ever will be , as
the supposition exist that a kettle of
stones holds it to the bottom .
Mellen , who lived in what is known
as the Cobble Stone school district,
went to William Person ' s Saturday
and rented a boat . As he was leaving
the dock he said , " When they look for
me they won't find me . " In the boat
was a kettle of stones and a long rope
attached to it .

Some time after ward the boat was
seen floating in the distance with no
one in it . The supposition exists that
he tied the rope to himself and then
with the kettle jumped overboard into
the lake.

He was a brother of DeForest Mellen
and a lso a father of Mrs . Dickenson,
a milliner at Belleville.

The body of Bela Mellen, who committed suicide by drowning
near Eenshaw Bay in Ellisburg several weeks ago, came ashore Sunday on Colwell's beach near that place.
He was married to Emily Weldon.
