Leroy E. Hotchkiss was the son of New York State Representative Gideon Hotchkiss and Ann Everts.

He enlisted in the Union Army on 3 Oct 1861 at Windsor, Broome Co, NY as a Sergeant in Co G, 89th New York State Volunteers, under the command of Capt Seymour L. Judd. He was discharged on 02 Oct 1862 at Antietam, Washington Co, MD, due to Typhoid Fever, from which he never completely recovered.

Leroy was a cousin of Jedediah Hotchkiss, map maker to Confederate Generals Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee. Jedediah's father Stiles Hotchkiss, was a brother to Leroy's father Gideon Hotchkiss.

Leroy never married and died at the New York State Soldiers and Sailors Home, Bath, Steuben Co, NY.

(Note that the date of birth and death are incorrect on his gravestone. The report of his death was received at the Pension Board in 1906, but was reported to them on Dec 28, 1905, by the New York State Soldiers and Sailors Home, the day after his death)
