Lloyd D. Hankins, 80, of Altamont, died unexpectedly at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at his home in Altamont.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Altamont, with Rev. Jeff VanDyke officiating.Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont, and for one hour before the funeral service at the church. U.S. Navy military burial rites will be conducted in Funkhouser Cemetery, rural Effingham, following the funeral service. For those who prefer memorial contributions, they may be made to Funkhouser Cemetery in care of Melvin Hankins, 10606 E. 1150th Ave., Effingham, IL 62401; Altamont VFW Post 7676, 302 W. Cumberland Road, Altamont, IL 62411; or to the donor's choice.

Lloyd Dale Hankins was born Nov. 14, 1927, the second son of 10 siblings into the family of Art Hankins and Vera Henderson-Hankins in Effingham County. Lloyd grew up and spent most of his life in Effingham County, graduating from Effingham High School. Before his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He began working for Humble Oil Company and later Exxon working in the Loudon field in St. Elmo for many years. He also managed Hankins Shell Service in Altamont and before his retirement, he was a paper handler for World Color Press in Effingham. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and held his membership at VFW Post 7676 in Altamont. For many years, Lloyd was a trustee for the Funkhouser Cemetery and devoted many hours on grounds maintenance of that cemetery. Lloyd had an acute interest in athletics beginning with Hodson Oilers fast pitch softball team in Altamont in the 1950s, which carried over into the community in all forms of Little League, basketball and other sports either with his family or participants of other family members of the Altamont community.

He married Dorothy Evelyn Stonum on July 4, 1952, at First Baptist Church in Effingham and she survives. In his passing he leaves behind his wife, Dorothy E. Hankins of Altamont; daughter, Debra (husband, Larry) Leturno of Homosassa, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Jane Shumaker-Hankins of Altamont; grandsons, Marcus (wife, Margie) Leturno and Travis Keith Leturno, both of Homosassa, Fla., and Derek James Hankins of Altoona, Pa.; granddaughter, Megan (fiancee, Tyler Dulunback) Hankins of Charleston; great-grandchildren, Tanner, Elise and Evan Leturno, all at home in Homosassa, Fla.; brothers, Gordon (wife, Irma) Hankins of Palmcoast, Fla., Larry Hankins of Menisse, Calif., and Melvin (wife, Trudy) Hankins of Effingham; sisters, Shirley Arnold of Effingham, Marion Zehner of Teutopolis, Linda Rose of Effingham and Kae Whitaker of Sigel; brother-in-law, Floyd Burch of Effingham; and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronald James Hankins; sisters, Wanda and her husband Robert Martin and Faye Burch; and brothers-in-law, James Rose, George Whitaker and Jack Zehner.
