Mary Elizabeth Stallbaumer, daughter of Herman and Anna Schulte Engelken was born in Dorchester, Iowa, on October 13, 1879 and departed this life at her home on February 8, 1963. She had reached the age of 83 years, 3 months and 25 days.
On August 28, 1900, she was united in marriage to John George Stallbaumer. They were the parents of eleven children, seven sons and four daughters. One son, Cletus, died at the age of nine months. Mr and Mrs Stallbaumer spent all of their married life on the farm near St. Benedict where their family was reared.
Mrs. Stallbaumer was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was an invalid for more than forty years, having been afflicted with rheumotoid arthritis. She had the loving care of her husband and family. Mr. and Mrs. Stallbaumer celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1950 and were married 62 years at the time of her death.
She is survived by her husband, George and these children: Mrs. Minnie Haug, Mrs. Cora Hammes of Seneca, Mrs. Leona Nolte of Nortonville, Mrs. Rita Broxterman of Baileyville, Alfred, Adrain, Cyril, and Hubert of Seneca, Raymond of Goff, and Emmett of Axtell, and forty-two grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by five brothers and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Stallbaumer, Seneca; Mrs. Margaret Hammes of Baileyville; Albert, Andrew and Joseph Engelken of Seneca; Leo Engelken, Kansas City, and John Engelken of Axtell.
Her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Rettle and Mrs. Clara Haug and one brother, Bernard Engelken, preceded her in death.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at St. Benedict and of the Altar Society.
Services were held there Monday morning with Father Leander Scheier offering the Requiem High Mass. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Casketbearers were grandsons; Maurice Haug, Donald Hammes, Larry Stallbaumer, Steven Broxterman, Charles Stallbaumer, and Leo Hammes. Honorary pallbearers were neighbors: Lawrence Holthaus, Peter Buessing, Leo Nordhus, Dennis Holthaus, Ben J. Olberding and Ed. Wietharn.
