He could have been born in 1843.
Veteran: Civil War, Missouri unit C.S.A.
Father: John Gibson, Tennessee
Mother: Samara Robinson, Kentucky
Wife: Lucinda Moore (predeceased)
Info: Jeremy Nichols, Sonoma County Historical Society and Sandy Frary, Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery Archivist (from death certificate).
Although Samuel J. Gibson’s death record indicates a pauper's burial, other records contradict. Specifically, the Sonoma County probate records (file #9679) show that he left an estate of $644.06. Against this, the mortician D. H. Lafferty filed a $200 claim, including $25 for "preservation of remains complete" and $20 for a "single grave in Rural Cemetery."
Jeremy Nichols, who maintains the burial records for the Old County Cemetery, says that since there is no claim for exhuming an already-buried body in the Old County Cemetery, Jeremy is forced to conclude that while Mr. Gibson may have been slated for burial in the Old County Cemetery and the death certificate filled out, the news of his positive financial condition must have arrived just in time, and the burial location quickly changed to Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery. Alternately, the burial location on the death certificate may simply have been an error.
