Ashton may have been killed by a grandson.
In 1870 M. H. Ashton, 30, and wife A. F., 25, were living on the H. C. Ashton Estate at Brooklin, Shelby County, with children Sallie L., 5, and Charles W., 3. Also living there were Sarah Booth, 26; Lucy Booth, 10; William Booth, 9; and Byrd Harding, 60, black farmer.
