Paul was born in Wisconsin and moved his family (wife Della and their (first) two children, Raymond and Esther) to Kelso, WA for a few years and then to Portland, OR., where he and Della later had two more daughters, Helen and Doris. He was a blacksmith and had a shop in Kelso as well as a shop in Portland on SE 17th Ave. at about Tacoma Street. Although some remodelling has taken place over the years their Portland home still stands. Pictures of his Kelso blacksmith shop can be viewed at the Historical Museum in Kelso.
