Chauncey enlisted into Company D of the 4th California Infantry as a private on October 10, 1861, re-enlisting on February 9, 1864. He was discharged on December 19, 1865.

He entered the Togus home on July 29, 1883 at the age of 66 years, with disabilities of double hernia and rheumatism. He identified himself as single, with next of kin Samuel A. Gregg of Franklin County, New York.

Chauncey is identified in the 1890 and 1900 census as a resident of the home. He is recorded as being born in June of 1818. Other records show 1816. His parents were also born in Vermont.

He died of senility on August 20, 1900.
