E S ABBOTT DIES IN MONTEREY
Eugene Sage Abbott, for over thirty years an office-holder in Tuolumne County, died in Monterey last Saturday evening from heart failure, which unexpectedly came upon him. The news was received in the Democrat office by a bulletin sent out by the Peninsula Daily Herald of Monterrey Tuesday evening. It is also announced that the burial would be made that day in the Woods mausoleum, Stockton, and later the remains would be transferred to this city for final sepulture.
Gene Abbott was he was widely known and called here was a native of this county and the eldest son of the late Austin Abbott, a pioneer of the early days. He was aged 63 years. In his young manhood he lost an arm which working at a sawmill which removed him from participation in any sort of work that required the use of two hands. He supplemented his grammar school education with a business course. Subsequently he was entered county politics and was elected to the office of County auditor, then consolidated with the Recorder's office. He served in this position for a number of years until the Auditor's office was placed under the County Clerk. He succeeded to the office of Tax Collector which he held for a long term of years. Twelve years ago when his last term ended he removed with his wife and daughter, Audine, to San Francisco. A few years ago the family went to Monterey where they established a home.
Gene Abbott enjoyed a popularity here that reached all sections of the county. His official record was a clean on throughout his long years of service, and he numbered his friends by the score. Many will regret to learn of his passing.
His immediate surviving relatives are his wife, formerly Miss Mary Cramer of Sonora, and his daughter, Audine, now Mrs Marcel Woods.
