Thomas left Dalserf Village, Lanarkshire, Scotland and sailed from Glasgow on 15 July 1849 arriving in New York City 26 August 1849 with his father and brother and sister. After a short stay in Philadelphia with relatives they removed to Hancock County, llinois and then in 1875 came to Wapello County, Iowa.

He was a man of local influence and late in life persuaded authorities to build a bridge across the Des Moines River near his property. He had been part of the California gold rush and married Mary Weems Stewart at Hancock County, Illinois on 27 December 1869.
