John was the son of Robert Warren Gardner and Julia Smith [Yarbrough] Gardner; he married [1] Nora Ellen Ellis 8 May 1911 in Throckmorton Co., Texas by Judge T.J. Wright. They had four children, Charles Gilbert, Johnnie Ophelia, Dolly born/died 1913 and a baby boy that died. John was Lighthouse Guard at Point Bolivar lighthouse during WWI. His wife, Nora Ellen, died in the flu epidemic of 1918, along with the baby boy she had just given birth to. They were buried together at Point Bolivar near the lighthouse.

John married [2] Lela Lee Whitmire (whose husband had died in the same flu epidemic) 16 Oct 1920 Navarro Co., Tx. She had three sons with her first husband, Jesse J. Whitmire, and her and John had eight more children together. All together he had 12 children of his own (two died) and they raised 13 together. John worked as a laborer and farmer most of his life. In 1937 he worked for the soil conservation. In 1941 he worked for the Deming Airport. John Martin played the harmonica and sang in a quartet at Church. He taught his sons to play instruments.
