BAXTER Funeral services for Richard Andrew Ashworth, 75, of Cookeville will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, at Cookeville First Assembly of God (16th Street & Woodland Avenue). Burial will be in Cookeville City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Baxter Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home from 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16, and after 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17 at the church .
Mr. Ashworth died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at his home.
He was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Atlanta, Ga., to the late Jesse Andrew "Andy" and Mary Emma Boles Ashworth.
A U.S. Army veteran, he graduated from Georgia State University in Atlanta with a diploma in journalism and later received an AB degree in journalism at the University of Georgia. He received his LLB degree in law at Woodrow Wilson College of Law in Atlanta in 1962.
He served as press secretary to Georgia Gov. Ernest Vandiver and press assistant to Georgia Lt. Gov. Peter Zack Geer. He served as Assistant and Associate Minority Counsel on House Committee on Public Works and Transportation. He was selected Civil Rights Coordinator of the Year, FmHa in 1991, secretary, board of directors, Commodity Credit Corp., Washington, D.C., and was
marketing director of White County Bank in Sparta, before finally retiring in 1994 as administrative assistant to the Secretary of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.
He was a member of Cookeville First Assembly of God. In past years, he had attended other churches where he had served as Sunday School teacher, Training Union director and Adult Bible teacher. He had been a member of the praise and worship team at Life and Praise Worship Center in Sparta, served as Care Group coleader, member of the Prayer Team and board of directors of Victory Fellowship in Algood.
His family includes his wife, Carol Bruce Ashworth of Cookeville; three daughters and a soninlaw, Suzette Roberts of Brandon, Fla., Donna and Ken Roberson of St. Albans, W. Va., Penny Allen of Sparta; three stepsons and daughtersinlaw, Harold Ralph and Sheri Maynard of Baxter, Larry Ray Maynard of Silver Point, Darren and Chrissy Maynard of Cookeville; seven grandchildren, Daniel Roberts, Kenny and Rachel Roberson, Andy, Nicole, Michael and Brandi Kay Allen; and five step grandchildren, Beth,
Rachel, Taylor, Abbie and Alex Maynard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Ruth Ashworth; a sister, Jean Ashworth; and a twin brother, Raymond Ashworth.
